We live in a society that frowns at ladies living alone. A number
of times, I’ve heard people say decent
single ladies do not live alone.
However, there are lot of reasons why a lady might have to
live alone. It shouldn’t be a big deal and it doesn’t make her any less decent.
If a Bachelor can live alone in peace, why can’t a Spinster?
Some ladies live alone because they have no choice, that’s the
only way they can live. Some her orphans, some are victims of domestic
violence.
Why is it easy for you to accept a lady living alone (off
campus) because she had to move closer to school than living alone when done
with education? Does it make a difference?
I have heard and seen all sorts.
I read somewhere about a lady who suffered domestic violence
in the hands of her aunt. From the story, the lady had a well-paying job, she
even had vacation allowance and travelled to different part of the world for
all these training courses. But each time she travelled for these trainings or
comes home a bit late, she comes back to meet her aunt who believes her purpose
for travelling or coming home late was to spend time with different men,
thereby treating her like a slave, hitting her with different item. (Thank god
for make-up, lol…)
It got me thinking… why should she endure such treatment
when she can easily afford an apartment?
I have come to realise that many women live their lives to
please the society, hoping that one day, one man from the pleased society will
come to marry them so they can be called “Mrs,”
since Mrs is now the double
promotion of Nigerian single ladies.
“Who a lady lives
with does not determine her body count.” The society standards have made
some ladies live in houses where they cannot breathe in peace just because they
don’t want to be seen as indecent.
If a man can live alone, a woman can. It changes nothing.
A lady staying with her family is not better than a lady
lounging in her apartment, neither is a lady living alone better than the one
living with her parents or family member.
Let people be comfortable living their lives the way it
works for them.
